Karakter Tokoh Utama dalam Film Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (Kajian Psikologi Sastra)

Abstract

The complexity of Marlina’s psychological condition, shaped by violence, trauma, and internal conflict, is reflected in her behavior and the decisions she makes throughout the storyline, making it compelling to examine from the perspective of literary psychology. This study aimed to describe the character of Marlina, the main character in Mouly Surya’s film Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak, based on the personality structures of the id, ego, and superego in Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a literary psychology approach. The primary data source was the film Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (2017), while the research data comprised Marlina’s dialogue, scenes, expressions, and actions that represent psychological aspects. Data were collected through visual text observation (close watching), attentive viewing accompanied by screen captures, documentation study, and the preparation of coding cards, and were subsequently analyzed through the stages of transcription, reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The results identified 18 data points related to personality structure, consisting of 6 id data points, 9 ego data points, and 3 superego data points. The id aspect was reflected in instinctual drives in the form of fear, anger, self-preservation instincts, and aggressive actions in response to threats. The ego was the most dominant personality structure, as demonstrated by Marlina’s ability to control her emotions, think rationally, make decisions, and adapt to the realities she faced. Meanwhile, the superego was reflected in feelings of guilt, concern, responsibility, and empathy toward others despite Marlina’s profound trauma. These findings indicate that Marlina’s personality dynamics are dominated by the function of the ego in balancing instinctual drives and moral considerations when confronting violence and trauma. This study contributes to the field of literary psychology, particularly to understanding the representation of character personality dynamics from the perspective of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory.
