Reference Management and Citation Style
Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference management software to ensure consistent in-text citations and reference lists. Using a tool does not remove the author’s responsibility to verify accuracy, completeness, and compliance with the journal’s author guidelines.
Consistent Formatting CSL-Compatible Tools Verify Before Submission
Supported Tools
The journal supports widely used reference managers. Many of these tools use Citation Style Language (CSL) to apply journal styles automatically.
Important: Always cross-check the output against the journal’s author guidelines and sample references. Automated styles may differ by version, database quality, or incomplete metadata.
Recommended Workflow
1) Build a Clean Library
Import records from trusted databases (Crossref, publisher sites, Scopus/WoS exports where available). Then validate: author names, year, title capitalization, journal name, volume/issue, pages, DOI/URL.
2) Select the Journal Style
Choose the journal’s citation style in the plug-in (Word/LibreOffice). If the exact journal style is unavailable, use the closest style and adjust manually to match the journal’s examples.
3) Refresh, Then Audit
Use “Refresh” / “Update Citations and Bibliography” before submission. Then run a final audit for missing fields, incorrect capitalization, broken DOIs, and mismatched in-text citations.
Mendeley (Desktop) – Style Installation
Open the style link below and follow the installation instructions. After installation, select the style within the Mendeley Cite plug-in (Microsoft Word) or the LibreOffice plug-in. If your document was prepared using another style, refresh citations after switching.

Ensure the selected style matches the journal’s current guidelines. If there is any discrepancy, follow the journal’s sample references as the final authority.
Zotero and EndNote – Practical Notes
Zotero (CSL)
- Add styles via Preferences → Cite → Styles.
- If a journal style is not listed, install a .csl file provided by the journal (if available).
- Use the Word plug-in to insert citations and generate the bibliography, then refresh before submission.
EndNote (Output Styles)
- Download the closest output style and place it in your EndNote Styles folder.
- Select the style in EndNote and in the Word “Cite While You Write” tab.
- Update citations and bibliography after any edits to reference metadata.
Common Issues and How to Avoid Them
- Missing DOI or URL: Add the DOI/URL to the record (do not paste a publisher tracking URL).
- Incorrect author names: Ensure family names and initials are placed correctly; fix capitalization and diacritics as needed.
- Journal title inconsistency: Use the official journal name; avoid abbreviations unless required by the journal’s style.
- Title case problems: Reference managers may not handle capitalization rules perfectly; manually verify article titles and proper nouns.
- Citation mismatches: Every in-text citation must appear in the reference list, and every reference must be cited in the text (unless the journal explicitly allows uncited references).
Pre-Submission Checklist
- All citations are generated via the plug-in (no manual typing that breaks links).
- The selected style matches the journal’s current author guidelines and examples.
- Each reference has complete metadata (authors, year, title, source, volume/issue, pages, DOI/URL).
- All in-text citations appear in the reference list, and vice versa.
- The bibliography is refreshed/updated immediately before submission.
