Abstract

The implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) using Chromebooks has the potential to support Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning oriented toward problem-solving and the use of digital technology. However, studies on its implementation in ninth-grade PAI learning at SMP Negeri 7 Bukittinggi remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of Chromebook-based PBL and identify the factors supporting and hindering its implementation. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive field research design. The informants comprised a PAI teacher, the vice principal for curriculum, and ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verified using triangulation. The results showed that Chromebook-based PBL was implemented through the preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. Chromebooks were used to access information, complete assignments, facilitate discussions, and support problem-solving. The implementation was supported by teacher readiness, the availability of devices and network access, school support, and student enthusiasm. The inhibiting factors included network instability, limited device availability, technical disruptions, and differences in students’ abilities to use technology and follow the stages of PBL. This study provides an empirical contribution to the development of technology-based PAI learning while emphasizing the importance of teacher readiness, digital infrastructure, and institutional support in integrating PBL and Chromebooks. Future research is recommended to involve broader research settings and participant groups and to examine the effectiveness of this learning model using a quantitative approach.
