Abstract
Although traditional healing practices have been widely studied, research specifically examining community perceptions of dukun sawan healing practices in Sukagumiwang Subdistrict, Indramayu Regency, remains limited. This study aims to analyze community perceptions of dukun sawan healing practices in the area. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The informants comprised four community members, one midwife, and one community leader selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations and were subsequently analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that community perceptions of dukun sawan healing practices are shaped by knowledge passed down through generations, experiences of undergoing treatment, the influence of family and the social environment, and beliefs in the perceived benefits following treatment. This study concludes that community acceptance of dukun sawan practices is based not only on individual experiences but is also constructed through social interaction and the intergenerational transmission of cultural values. These findings contribute to the development of the sociology of health by strengthening the application of George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism theory in explaining how communities construct meanings regarding traditional healing practices. The practical implications of this study emphasize the importance of providing healthcare services that consider cultural values and local beliefs while creating opportunities for further research on dukun sawan practices within broader social and cultural contexts.
