Abstract

Although the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Google Workspace, and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) has expanded in education, the integration of all three during the project design stage in Machining Engineering instruction remains limited. This study aimed to describe the use of AI and Google Workspace to support PjBL in the Fundamentals of Machining Engineering subject for Grade 10 students at SMK Negeri 5 Padang. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design involving 62 students and one teacher selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation and subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that 88.71% of the students used AI, primarily to explore project ideas, whereas 91.94% used Google Docs to develop and document project designs. In addition, 96.77% of the students reported that group discussions became more active, although difficulties in identifying ideas and establishing cooperation persisted. These findings indicate that AI and Google Workspace perform complementary functions in the implementation of PjBL: AI supports idea exploration, whereas Google Workspace facilitates collaboration and the documentation of project designs. This study confirms that integrating these two technologies has the potential to enhance the quality of project design and student engagement in vocational education. However, their use requires teacher guidance to ensure that technology strengthens, rather than replaces, students’ thinking and collaboration processes.
