Konflik Sosial dalam Novel Jprut Karya Putu Wijaya

Abstract

The depiction of conflicts among individuals and social groups related to economic conditions, political interests, and changing social values in Putu Wijaya’s novel JPRUT provides the basis for this study, while the previous studies cited have not specifically examined the novel through Lewis A. Coser’s theory of social conflict. This study aims to describe the forms, causal factors, and impacts of social conflict in JPRUT from Coser’s perspective. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method, using the novel JPRUT, published by Basabasi in 2017 and comprising 184 pages, as its data source. Data consisting of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences related to social conflict were collected through close reading, note-taking, and library research, and then analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation. The results identified 23 data units, comprising 8 units on forms of social conflict, 7 units on causal factors, and 8 units on the impacts of conflict. The forms of conflict included intragroup and intergroup conflict. The causal factors included differences among individuals, differences in social class, differences in interests, and social change. The impacts of conflict included the breakdown of group unity, changes in personality, and the destruction of social values and norms. This study concludes that social conflict in JPRUT is represented as dynamics associated with personal interests, social status, economic pressures, and changing values in society. These findings provide an understanding of the relationships among the forms, causes, and impacts of social conflict in literary works through Lewis A. Coser’s perspective.
