Abstract

Research on family disruption and youth behavior has expanded, yet limited attention has been given to how young adults from disrupted family environments experience and interpret their involvement in nightlife. This study explores the forms, underlying reasons, and meanings of nightlife involvement among young adults in City X. A qualitative phenomenological design was employed with three participants aged 18–22 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings generated three major themes: family dysfunction as a source of emotional distress; nightlife as a space for escape and social acceptance; and the emergence of risk awareness, self-reflection, and future aspirations. Participants’ involvement included social and recreational activities, alcohol and cigarette use, and, for one participant, employment as a lady companion. They interpreted nightlife as an alternative space for obtaining emotional support, acceptance, freedom, and economic opportunities while simultaneously recognizing its physical, psychological, and interpersonal risks. The study contributes a phenomenological understanding of nightlife as a multidimensional experience that may function concurrently as a coping space, a source of social belonging, an economic opportunity, and a setting of vulnerability. These findings highlight the need for supportive interventions that address family relationships, emotional needs, and access to constructive social support rather than focusing exclusively on nightlife behavior.
