Abstract

Domestic violence (KDRT) remains a problem affecting women, while awareness of how to recognize, understand, and respond to it has not yet fully developed. In Solok City, the view that domestic violence is a private matter also influences women’s courage to report violence and seek protection. This study aims to describe women’s awareness of the phenomenon of domestic violence in Solok City. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 46 purposively selected informants, comprising 38 married women, 2 informants from Dinas Pemberdayaan Perempuan dan Perlindungan Anak (DPPPA) in Solok City, and 6 members of the Solok City community. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and documentation, and then analyzed through the stages of data collection, reduction, and display, as well as conclusion drawing and verification. The analysis used the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA) framework, encompassing social identity, perceived injustice, and group efficacy. The results showed that women’s awareness of domestic violence was beginning to develop, particularly in recognizing physical violence, verbal violence, and economic neglect and understanding the existence of reporting and protection services. However, this awareness remained insufficiently developed because domestic violence still tended to be understood as a personal matter and some forms of violence continued to be normalized. Trust in institutions, economic dependence, concerns about the consequences of reporting, and limited social support also influenced women’s courage in responding to domestic violence. These findings clarify the gap between recognizing violence and having the courage to respond to it, and indicate the relationship between women’s awareness and social, economic, and institutional conditions in the context of domestic violence in Solok City.
