Relationship between Human Resource Management Strategies and Academic Staff Job Performance in Federal Universities in North Central Geo-Political Zone, Nigeria

Main Article Content

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between human resource management strategies, specifically promotion and the payment of salaries and wages, and academic staff job performance in federal universities in North Central Nigeria. A correlational research design was employed, involving a sample of 219 academic staff drawn from a population of 4,378. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researcher. Means and standard deviations were used to address the research questions, while Pearson’s product–moment correlation was used to test the hypotheses at the .05 significance level. The findings indicated that promotion and the payment of salaries and wages were each significantly associated with academic staff job performance. These results highlight the relevance of promotion and remuneration practices to understanding staff performance and provide evidence to inform human resource management in the universities studied. The study recommends that government and university authorities ensure adequate resources and accurate personnel records to facilitate timely promotions and salary payments. It also recommends providing adequately equipped laboratories and office spaces to support academic staff in fulfilling their responsibilities.
