Abstract

Although digital journalism has received considerable scholarly attention, the relationships among data practices, audience metrics, algorithmic visibility, platform dependence, media power, and professional accountability remain insufficiently integrated. This study examines how these dimensions interact in the transformation of digital journalism and their implications for journalistic quality and public responsibility. Adopting a qualitative interpretive approach, the study draws on books, journal articles, and academic book chapters selected for their relevance, recency, and theoretical contribution. Thematic analysis involved identifying key ideas, organizing them into four analytical dimensions, and synthesizing their interrelationships. The findings indicate that digital technologies expand capacities for information gathering, analysis, and presentation, while audience metrics and algorithmic distribution shape news visibility and editorial priorities. These processes intersect with platform dependence, commercial pressures, and media ownership structures, creating challenges for editorial independence and professional accountability. By integrating these dimensions into a common analytical framework, the study advances an interconnected understanding of digital journalism. It concludes that journalistic quality depends on critical interpretation of evidence, independent editorial judgment, and clear responsibility for published content. The findings suggest that news organizations should use audience metrics as supporting information, critically evaluate data and AI-assisted outputs, and maintain transparent editorial practices. Further empirical research could examine how Indonesian newsrooms navigate these pressures across different organizational and ownership contexts.
