Effectiveness of Rat Pest Control (Rattus sp.) Using Rodenticide in Immature Oil Palm Plants at PT PP London Sumatra Indonesia Tbk Dolok Estate

Abstract
Rats (Rattus sp.) are major pests in immature oil palm plantations, where their attacks can impair plant growth and cause economic losses, highlighting the need for effective and economically efficient control strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of brodifacoum-based rodenticide in controlling rat pests and to analyze the associated control costs at PT PP London Sumatra Indonesia Tbk., Dolok Estate. A descriptive quantitative observational approach was employed from October 2025 to February 2026 in Block 25112003, Division 02, involving two plots with different previous land uses. Rat activity was monitored weekly based on the percentage of missing bait using a 20% threshold, while control costs were analyzed according to expenditure components. Data were analyzed descriptively and using an independent-samples t-test. The findings showed that the percentage of missing bait in Plot 1 cumulatively declined from 29.5% to 21.8%, whereas Plot 2 remained relatively stable at 21.5–21.8%. Rat attack levels differed significantly between the two plots, indicating variation in pest activity according to land characteristics. Brodifacoum-based rodenticide supported rat control, although its effectiveness varied between plots. The study concludes that rodenticide-based rat management should consider block-specific land characteristics to improve control effectiveness. These findings provide practical evidence for developing more targeted rat-control strategies and improving resource allocation in immature oil palm plantations.
