Biography

Isaac John Umaru, born in Kuburshosho Michika Local Government, Adamawa state Nigeria, received his BSc in Biochemistry University of Maiduguri Borno State Nigeria in 1995, MSc Biochemistry from University of Benin Edo State Nigeria and PhD in Medical Biochemistry from University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in 2020. Isaac Joined Federal University Wukari in 2012 and became a professor in 2024, he is the current Deputy Dean Student Affairs Federal University Wukari and the current Head of Department Medical Biochemistry College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Federal University Wukari. Isaac research has focused on the Medicinal and Medical potentials of plants with relevance to Biochemistry. His research group use extraction, chromatographic techniques, isolation and characterisation, biological activities of crude and pure compounds in relation to the field of Medical Biochemistry, endemic diseases, such as ulcer, cancer, antibacterial, antifungal, diabetes, inflammation and antioxidant. He is currently focusing on plant-based drug discovery and development against snake venom, cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis HIV and ulcer as well as the role of plant extracts in obesity induced infertility, hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis. His research group has extracts from various plants to study these processes. Isaac John Umaru has a distinguished record as a lecturer and research supervisor. For 12 years he has taught an intensive survey of biochemistry for advanced biochemistry undergraduates in the life sciences. He has also taught clinical biochemistry for medical students, and graduate courses on medical and clinical Biochemistry in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Federal University Wukari. He has sponsored numerous PhD, MSc, and BSc honours thesis and has received awards for his outstanding researcher as the 444th Medical Biochemistry Scientist and University ranking in the world, and Vice Chancellors award as one of the hard-working staffs of the year. To his credit is six book chapters, six Textbook and 130 publications in the field of Medicinal and Medical research published in international and reputable journals.

Biography

Hauwa Aduwamai Umaru (Nee: Ngubdo) was born in Lassa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State Nigeria. She is a Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry with a strong inclination towards Micronutrients. Her research interests mainly focus on nutritional composition, dietary pattern of pregnant women and its effects on infant birth weight, discovery and development for essential energy-rich compounds and a wealth of health-promoting compounds. As well as updating nutrition as a substitute for synthesized drugs in nutritional disorders, which provides crucial information regarding the role of diet in the onset, progression and prognosis of nutritional diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart diseases and stroke. After gaining a Bachelor degree in Biochemistry from University of Maiduguri Borno State Nigeria with upper grade, she did her Master’s degree in Biochemistry from Federal University of Technology Yola, now Moddibo Adama University Yola Nigeria. She gained Nutritional Biochemistry training and expertise during her Ph.D. in University of Maiduguri Borno State. She Joined Modibbo Adama University in 1998 and became a Professor in 2020. She is currently the Head of Biochemistry Department, Moddibo Adama University Yola Nigeria with particular focus on the fundamental purpose of nutrition in Biochemistry. She is currently focusing on nutritional based drug discovery and development against cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis and ulcer as well as the role of nutrition in obesity induced infertility, hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. The approach is also working on ways to determine the ideal dietary and nutritional requirements of both healthy and sick people using locally available foods. She has published research and review articles in the national and international peer-reviewed journals. She is a member of Nigeria Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB). To her credit is three book chapters, and 80 publications in the field of Nutritional research published in international and reputable journals.

Biography

Nanyak Zingfa Galam, MBBS, MSc, PhD,** born on June 13, 1980, in Barkin-Ladi, Plateau State, is a distinguished Professor of Human Physiology at the Federal University Wukari. He hails from Langtang North, Plateau State, Nigeria. A graduate of the University of Jos, where he earned his MBBS in 2006 and an MSc in Human Physiology in 2014, Professor Galam further advanced his expertise by obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Near East University, Cyprus, in 2020. With specialization in Cell Physiology, Phytomedicine, and Medical Biotechnology, his academic career spans various roles, from Lecturer II to Professor, with significant contributions to the fields of physiology and biomedical research. Throughout his career, he has held key academic leadership roles, including serving as Head of the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Jos and acting as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Professor Galam's research interests are broad, focusing on the use of natural products for drug development, cancer treatment, and the study of physiological effects of substances like nicotine. He has published extensively in reputable journals, with his work contributing to advancements in areas such as the anti-inflammatory properties of plant extracts, reproductive physiology, and the application of biomaterials in medicine. His commitment to education is evident in his extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, where he has supervised numerous theses and projects. Beyond academia, Professor Galam is actively involved in community service, including volunteering as a medical officer and participating in various health initiatives. He is also a member of several professional associations, reflecting his dedication to the advancement of medical sciences in Nigeria.
